After a disappointing 2016 campaign, the Pirates are eager to get things started in 2017. While the team spent the offseason prepping to be a playoff contender, the executive chefs at both Levy Restaurants (Suites and Club Level) and Aramark (main concourses) have built a PNC Park menu that will impress into October.
One of the greatest traditions in the bigs, the Pittsburgh Pierogi Race, dons a new face. Starting at the Bucs’ 2017 home opener vs. Braves on April 7th, Pizza Penny will join Bacon Burt, Cheese Chester, Jalapeño Hannah, Oliver Onion and Sauerkraut Saul. Even though that may be the most exciting addition for ‘Burgh fans, let’s get to the stuff we can eat!
Bavarian Soft Pretzel / Levy Restaurants
The first addition is a house-made Bavarian Soft Pretzel. Fans seated in the club and suite can enjoy hand-crafted salted and cinnamon-sugar dusted pretzel twists and mini knots. Executive Chef Adam Holt argued, "There is nothing better than a warm, soft pretzel at a baseball game.” Chef Holt also brings some Pittsburgh flare to the club and suite level with his signature smoked kielbasa sliders topped with sauerkraut, spicy mustard, pepper jack cheese on mini onion rolls.
If you are still on your 2017 new year resolution, grab the special Caprese salad consists of field greens, tomatoes, mozzarella, basil clover honey and balsamic reduction.
House BURGHer Stak / Aramark Sports
Exclusive in the Pittsburgh Baseball Club, fans can grab a delicious signature pizza made from hand-stretched dough fired at 700 degrees in the 5,000-pound stone oven. In addition, the club will feature a rotating burger special for each home stand.
At the Aramark kickoff event, they rolled out the House BURGHer Stak which features boardwalk style fries, topped with all the burger essentials, seasoned ground beef, American cheese, grilled onions, our house secret sauce, fresh tomatoes, shaved iceberg, and topped with a toasted brioche slider bun. This monstrosity among others will be available during select home stands throughout the season.
Carved Porchetta Sandwich
PNC Park added a new concession area behind section 118 called “The Market.” For fans trying to find a quick and accessible healthy choice, the grab-and-go area will feature a chicken Caesar salad, cucumber sandwiches and hummus and pita plate. The main event for most fans at “The Market” is their slow-cooked short rib macaroni and cheese. The signature sandwich is a hand carved, house-made Porchetta Sandwich, which has arugula, tomatoes and lemon-caper mayo spread on Breadworks ciabatta.
Finally, the Pirates have shown that they are committed to providing vegan alternatives for fans at the ballpark. Executive chef George Drakulich of Aramark decided to do some research on vegan and vegetarian options. Instead of looking at cookbooks, he became a vegetarian for two weeks and a vegan for two weeks and has maintained that meat-free diet for the past four months losing 27 pounds.
Toasted Tofu / Aramark Sports
Drakulich is bringing his research to the fan favorite, Rivertowne Hall of Fame Club where fans can enjoy buffalo'd cauliflower or an ultimate vegan burger. Furthermore, The Just4U area in Section 130 has Toasted Tofu, gluten-free chips and cheese and a grilled veggie power chop. Drakulich added of his journey that "This has been life-changing for me. We have made some really good vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options. There are so many fresh vegetables available. It's a lifestyle, but it's not for everyone. But we want to have food offerings for everyone."
"All of these options are for an enhanced fan experience, " Pirates president Frank Coonelly said. "We want PNC Park to be the cool place to be."
