Popeye’s Jerry Rice Commercial Causes Social Media Backlash
January 30, 2017
Popeye’s released a new ad featuring Jerry Rice and it’s safe to say that it did not go over well.
This isn’t the first time the NFL Hall of Famer was featured in a Popeye’s ad, but this is the first one that cause this much backlash on social media. The ad highlights many “Wingovations” but the helmet with a piece of fried chicken in the facemask drew the most fire.
Fans were roasting Popeye’s and Jerry Rice on Popeye’s YouTube channel before the fast food chain disabled comments.
"Jerry just set black people back 437 years," one user wrote. "Thanks, Jerry. We're slaves again."
And then they took to Twitter.
This isn't the first time the 49ers legend was in hot water, earlier this year he commented on current 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the National Anthem when he tweeted ‘All Lives Matter.’ He later apologized.
