The Insane, Over-the-Top, Heart Attack-Inducing Burgers of Melbourne
January 20, 2017
If you thought things were always bigger in Texas, then you’ve never been to Australia. Maybe there’s something in the water in Melbourne or maybe they just eat a lot, but I’ve never been more blown away by #foodporn worthy pictures then I have been with the burgers of Melbourne.
For those of you who aren’t tennis fans, the Australian Open, the first of four majors of the year, is currently going on (other majors include Wimbledon, the French Open and US Open) So what better time than the Australian Open to take a trip down under to showcase the best, insane, over-the-top burgers of Melbourne.
Founded in 2014, JD’s burgers quickly climbed the list of top burgers in Melbourne. They are Japanese Inspired asian fusion burgers and are also very affordable. If a regular burger isn’t enough for you, look to take their challenge. It’s only 16 patties high, cost you $99 and you’ll have 40 minutes to finish. Challenge accepted!
This family owned business cooks their food hot. How hot? Over volcanic rocks, that hot. The restaurant prides itself on fresh ingredients. The menu changes seasonally to offer only the freshest product. “Stone Grill is recognized as one of the healthiest methods of cooking, as all produce is completely trimmed of fats and no added oils are used. The result is a freshly grilled, tender and nutritious meal with a sensational taste, unique to Stonegrill.” So now you won’t feel too guilty eating that…
This burger joint is often visited by the Melbourne burger regulars @thehamburler_, @hulksmashfood and @damoforce and it’s all for good reason. When the big guys come, Head Chef and Owner John Liu aims to please with some pretty eye popping creations.
Cafe 51 claims their burgers are a work of art and can you blame them? These burgers are insane, might be the craziest in Melbourne. Hot Dogs wrapped in bacon, tiger sauce, XXX BBQ sauce, Mac n’ Cheese, and Maple Syrup are only a handful of toppings offered. If that wasn’t enough Cafe 51 has the 20-patty burger challenge and claims to be the original Tower Burger.
Melbourne’s first, authentic Chip Shop (fries), Mammy’s Boy prides itself on offering the true taste of home by getting product from Ireland and England. Even though it’s known for its fries doesn’t mean it is a slouch when it comes to its over-the-top burgers. Check out the (modded) Milf Burger: double beef patty, southern fried chicken, bacon, bacon bits, cheddar cheese, hot chips, onions, jalapenos, taco sauce, garlic sauce, and mammy’s sauce.
If you like Wagyu then you’re in the right spot. Bar Burger Bro only feature Wagyu beef from southern Australia and these burgers are absolutely insane. Check out these two: 4 wagyu patties, 4 Chipolata pork sausages, roast beef, corned beef, hot sopressata, bacon, hash browns, mushrooms, egg, red peppers, onions, black jack cheddar cheese, Swiss cheese, black jack cheese sauce melt, chili mayo and a pickle on top.
Believe it or not, this was just a small sampling of what Melbourne has to offer with many other burger joints all across the Australian city. So if you see Roger Federer, Serena or Novak Djokovic pack on a few pounds while at the Australian Open, you know the reason why.
